The New Imperative: Understanding Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Today

What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which individuals acquire thorough knowledge, skills and attitude and apply the same to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. The Core Competencies of SEL

The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) has identified five core competencies that form the foundation of SEL:

  1. Self-Awareness: The ability to recognize one’s emotions, thoughts, and values and understand how they influence one’s behaviour. This includes accurately assessing one’s strengths and limitations and possessing a well-grounded sense of confidence, positive behaviour and optimism.
  2. Self-Management: The ability to manage stress, controlling impulses, motivating oneself, and setting and working towards personal and academic goals effectively in different situations.
  3. Social Awareness: The ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures. This includes understanding social and ethical norms for behaviour and recognizing family, school, and community resources and supports.
  4. Relationship Skills: The ability to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups. This includes clear communication, active listening, cooperation, resisting inappropriate social pressure, negotiating conflict constructively, and seeking and offering help when needed.
  5. Responsible Decision-Making: The ability to make caring and constructive choices about personal and social behaviour. This involves considering ethical standards, safety concerns, social norms, the realistic evaluation of consequences of various actions, and the well-being of self and others.

The Importance of SEL in Today’s World

SEL positively impacts students’ academic performance. By fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom environment, SEL helps students feel more connected to their school community, which in turn enhances their motivation and engagement in learning.

Family and Community Engagement: Involving families in SEL initiatives For example- Making PTM more interactive where parents get the chance to watch their children’s skills through performance on the same day. Schools can provide resources and opportunities for parents to learn about SEL and support their children’s social and emotional development at home.
  4. Assessment and Evaluation: Regular assessment of SEL programs is essential to ensure they are meeting their goals and making a positive impact on students. This includes gathering feedback from students, teachers, and parents, as well as monitoring students’ progress in personal development.
